Countries have different carbon-free energy (CFE) sources. This analysis looks at the contribution of hydroelectric power in the share of primary energy consumption among the top 12 energy-consuming countries. 

How to read the chart?

The bubble chart shows total energy consumption (y-axis) and share of CFE in total energy consumption (x-axis), while bubble size reflects the share of hydroelectric power.

Above 20% Share

Brazil lead the pack with 26.3%, followed by Canada at 21.9%

Between 5% and 10% Share

China and Russia with 6.8% and 5.7% share, respectively

▶️ India‘s share is at 3.4%.

▶️ Brazil remains the undisputed leader among the top 12 energy-consuming countries, followed by Canada, China, Russia, Japan and India.

▶️ Beyond the top 12 energy-consuming countries, Norway, followed by Iceland, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden, has the largest hydroelectric power share of primary energy consumption.
